PTSA Funding Co-Curricular Did you know that the co-curricular opportunities which are held before or after school and supervised by parents, teachers, or the Gifted Services staff are funded entirely by a generous donation from the Willow Creek PTSA? Without this funding, programs such as the Spelling Bee, and Geography Bee would not be possible. I would like to thank the Willow Creek PTSA for its continued support of Gifted Services co-curricular activities and ask that parents do their part by supporting the PTSA’s fundraising efforts throughout the year.

GATEway The Rochester chapter of the Minnesota Council for the Gifted and Talented (MCGT), Gateway, is a non-profit advocacy group comprised of parents and interested community members. GATEway meetings are held monthly starting in October. The group meets from12:30 to 3:00 PM in Room 26 of the Edison building.  Drop in as your schedule allows and feel free to bring a sack lunch.  Children may attend with a parent if they bring a quiet activity.  There are a number of events and activities sponsored by GATEway. For a complete listing and more information check the GATEway website at www.geocities.com/gateroch/ or call contact Dee Voldal at pres@rochestergateway.com . There is also a GATEway link on my web page.

Parent Information Session The Gifted Services Department of Rochester Public Schools welcomes families and community members to three meetings of our Gifted Services Advisory Council for the 2015-2016 school year. Each evening will include an information session about district services, and time for feedback and questions from families and community members. The goal of these meetings is dual: to share information about services available in Rochester Public Schools and to receive feedback about how we can improve our support of Rochester students.

UMTYMP is back! UMTYMP (University of Minnesota Talented Youth Math Program) provides a challenging opportunity for Minnesota's talented math students.  The highly accelerated courses are specially designed to provide these students with an intense academic experience that will stimulate their mathematical interest and abilities.  The program is offered through the University of Minnesota Math Center for Educational Programs, with support from the State of Minnesota.  Students currently in grades 5-7 are eligible to take the UMTYMP algebra qualifying test.  Registration forms are outside my office in J 126 . For more general information about the program, go to;

Northwestern University Midwest Academic Talent Search

The Northwestern University Midwest Academic Talent Search is sponsored by the Center for Talent Development, based at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.  The NUMATS gives high performing students (see eligibility criteria on the website) the opportunity to take an off level standardized test.  Sixth grade students are invited to take the Explore test which is normally given to 8th grade students.  Seventh and eighth grade students are invited to take the ACT or SAT, internationally recognized assessment tools used for college admission, as a practice test in order to gain some insight into their strengths.  Participants will receive information on high school educational programs for gifted students at Northwestern University, as well as colleges and universities across the U.S., and in tenth grade, students receive The College Guide magazine.

There are a variety of activities for our middle school students to try. Students may choose to follow an interest or talent or try something new.  Friendships are made when students of similar interests and strengths are involved in activities together and academic success improves when students are involved.
